Cast Iron Hike

I stumbled upon a band about 6 months age that I seemed to miss out while I was getting into punk and hardcore music in the early 90's. I heard their names plenty of times but never really paid attention to them until a few months ago when finally took the much needed time to search their music and history and I was stunned and blown away. Cast Iron Hike's music portrayed a hardcore bands sound with a rock and roll attitude and they pull it off damn well mind you. Many people I talked top in the past spoke of Cast Iron Hike of hardcore version of AC/DC. Cast Iron Hike were just intense and honest without fitting the cliche mold of what hardcore has been turned into today. Their music was down right urgent and had a slow sound at times but at the same time fast and aggressive with out sounding unoriginal. They mixed song structured speeds perfectly and god knows they are one of the catchiest bands I have ever heard. Many bands in the punk and hardcore realm loose the idea of what a "riff" should be and what it is, Cast Iron Hike most definitely did not. After listening to them over and over I got a strong impression of other music tastes that I'm in love with like Quicksand or Helmet. This band fused together the perfect post hardcore sound with straight up catchy rock n roll.

They weren't around but 4 years and released a small ep on a small defunct label called Big Wheel Recreation and a EP on Trustkill Records. They moved on to the bigger dogs and signed with Victory and released an amazing album called "Watch It burned". The band broke up in the middle 90's but majority of members have formed some amazing bands the guitarist Michael Gallagher is now a member of Isis, a bands I've been addicted to over the last 2 years, rhythm guitarist Christian Pupecki is with mighty Doomriders, Vocalist Jake Brennan has a solo career and bassist Pete Degraaf is now a member of The Black. Cast Iron Hike still maintain a myspace page that offers more information on the band and their new projects.

So doo yourself a favor and check out a few of their tunes at their myspace page...
